Methotrexate (Oncology-Injection)/Selected Salicylates Interactions

How the interaction occurs:

When these two medicines are taken together, your body may not process methotrexate properly.

What might happen:

Your blood levels of methotrexate may increase and cause toxic effects such as fever, chills, mouth sores, unusual bruising or bleeding, or black stools. These effects are more likely if you are taking a higher dose of methotrexate, such as doses used in the treatment of cancer or severe psoriasis, or if you are regularly taking higher doses of aspirin, e.g. more than 4 adult-strength aspirin tablets per day.

What you should do about this interaction:

Contact your healthcare professionals (e.g. doctor or pharmacist) as soon as possible about taking these two medicines together. They may already be aware of this drug interaction and may be monitoring you for it. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.
