Dolutegravir-Rilpivirine/Selected Oral Cations; Antacids; H2 Antagonists Interactions

How the interaction occurs:

Your medicine contains aluminum, calcium, iron, lanthanum, magnesium, sucralfate, and/or zinc, which are cations that may bind to your dolutegravir in your digestive tract. This prevents your body from absorbing dolutegravir-rilpivirine.Dolutegravir-rilpivirine needs some gastric acid to be absorbed. Antacids and H2 antagonists decrease the amount of acid in your stomach.

What might happen:

The blood levels of your dolutegravir-rilpivirine may be decreased, which will decrease its effectiveness.If you take an antacid or H2 antagonist at the same time as your dolutegravir-rilpivirine, the amount of dolutegravir-rilpivirine that is absorbed into your blood may decrease and it may not work as well.

What you should do about this interaction:

You should time when you take your dolutegravir-rilpivirine and your other medicine so that you do take dolutegravir either 4 hours before or 6 hours after your other medicine.Let your healthcare professionals (e.g. doctor or pharmacist) know that you are taking these medicines together. If you are taking a H2 antagonist (e.g. cimetidine, famotidine, nizatidine, ranitidine), take it at least 4 hours before or 12 hours after you take your dolutegravir-rilpivirine. If you are taking an antacid (aluminum/magnesium hydroxide, calcium carbonate), take it at least 4 hours before or 6 hours after you take your dolutegravir-rilpivirine.If you have questions about how to time when you take your medicines, ask your pharmacist.Your healthcare professionals may already be aware of this interaction and may be monitoring your for it. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.
