Rilpivirine/Proton Pump Inhibitors Interactions

How the interaction occurs:
Rilpivirine needs some gastric acid to be absorbed. Proton pump inhibitors decrease the amount of acid in your stomach.
What might happen:
The amount of rilpivirine that is absorbed into your blood may decrease and it may not work as well.
What you should do about this interaction:
Let your healthcare professionals (e.g. doctor or pharmacist) know right away that you are taking these medicines together. Your doctor may want to change your proton pump inhibitor to another medicine. If your doctor instructs you to take a H2 antagonist (e.g. cimetidine, famotidine, nizatidine, ranitidine), take it at least 12 hours before or 4 hours after you take your rilpivirine. If your doctor instructs you to take an antacid (aluminum/magnesium hydroxide, calcium carbonate), take it at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after you take your rilpivirine. If you have any questions about how or when to take your medicine, ask your pharmacist.Your healthcare professionals may already be aware of this interaction and may be monitoring you for it. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.
