COVID-19 Vaccines/Orthopoxvirus Vaccines Interactions

How the interaction occurs:

Both of these vaccines may cause inflammation (or irritation) of your heart muscle (myocarditis) or heart lining (pericarditis).

What might happen:

You may have a higher risk of experiencing myocarditis or pericarditis.Myocarditis and pericarditis have occurred more frequently in adolescent and young adult males after the 2nd dose of COVID-19 vaccine and within a week of vaccination.Myopericarditis has occurred after smallpox vaccination with ACAM2000. It is unknown whether there is a risk with the smallpox-mpox vaccine (Jynneos).

What you should do about this interaction:

Let your healthcare professionals (e.g. doctor or pharmacist) know if you have received either a COVID-19 vaccine or a smallpox-mpox vaccine in the past 4 weeks. Let your doctor know right away if you notice chest pain, shortness of breath, or a fast, fluttering, or pounding heartbeat (palpitations).Your healthcare professionals may already be aware of this interaction and may be monitoring you for it. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.
