The first time I got my injection of Depo it was right after I had my period. I did not get a period again until I got my second shot and my period lasted for about 3 months. It was not a very heavy period but I was definitely having continuous light bleeding that was mixed with an off-white discharge sometimes. It was not fun. After I got my third shot the bleeding stopped. I noticed that when it was close to time for me to get my next scheduled shot I would have some slight break through bleeding. It would subside once I got my next shot. I have not had a "normal" period while on depo. I have not had any weight gain either. The only side effects I would say I have are exhaustion, breakouts on my face, and a lower sex drive. I have heard depo causes bone loss so I take a calcium supplement every day to counteract that. I have not become pregnant while on depo and I just recently received my fourth shot. I would say it is very effective.

I've been on the shot for almost two years now. It was a easy decision since i could never stay on track with the pills and wont use a IUD. I was fine for the first year, no bleeding but a bit of spotting when i got the first shot (on queue with my period) but then nothing. But come the first year mark, i suddenly noticed everything going downhill, horrible mood swings, ill be happy, then angry, then sad. I noticed a serious decrease in my mental health. My depression which was manageable until September this year, became almost uncontrollable. I use to be a anxiety free, college student managing depression pretty well considering everything. Now i have severe anxiety, unable to think straight or figure anything out. I often notice i get completely lost, can't think, i'm forgetting things i heard 5 seconds ago. Then started the bleeding, 2 full weeks of unusual on and off bleeding, ranging from bright red, to brown and then black, what the hell?.. , went to the doctor and he said it was usual.. that it wasnt a issue, It stopped and haven't had it again until recently the bleeding started again, suddenly im gushing blood again and this is nothing like the first time, i'm passing golf ball sized blood clots with no other blood with it. They range from a tiny blood clot to huge ones and i've never had a problem with blood blots before. Depo provera has caused be severe depression and anxiety, mood swings, horrible chest pain. Pain that has continued for almost a year now. Unexplained but excruciating, unable to breath or move at all because of it. This is a horrible birth control, but at 20, it is the most dependable one (as said by my doctor). My doctor pushing all side effects i get from this birth control off as nothing. All sites on the internet say to go to the doctor and get medical attention for immediately for most of these side effects but he says i'm just fine.. Seriously. Take this drug of the market and stop giving it to women. It is HORRIBLE.

I never had pimples in my life until now, gained 5 lbs in the first 2 months, i had to pull myself together from these insane mood swings, my eczema came back from when i was a little girl, the headaches and ringing in my ears will not go away, its hard to "want" sex,it makes you extremely dry, spotting last for 2 weeks at a time, i am constantly constipated. before the shot i was a normal healthy person,im also experiencing extreme anxiety and the depression got better but your body and mind will not be the same on Depo Provera. I really wish they would warn you about how severe the side effects can be especially to a woman with no issues before like myself. I just want my body to be back to normal, i dont care about how "easy" the shot is to take every 3 months because the side effects are not worth it. TRUST ME. I just pray my body returns back to normal. BTW i am only 21 years old...

i have been on the depo shot for over two years. the first 6 months i experienced heavy bleeding. i have gotten the worst migranes, i have gained over 20 pounds, i now have high blood pressure, high heart rate and low sex drive. the only good to the depo shot is not having to remember to take it everyday. i am now switching to the cryselle pills.
