I have been fortunate in not having any serious side effects with taking Pradaxa, except that taking it on an empty stomach always gives me heartburn. Since my evening dose is at 8PM, I don't like to eat anything that late. For awhile, I was able to stop the heartburn by having a cup of hot chocolate. Had to stop that because of needing to get up too many times at night! Fortunately, I discovered that simply chewing two pieces of sugarless gum completely stops my heartburn! Hope that info helps someone else.

My 84 year old father was given this drug after being diagnosed with afib after a bout of pneumonia. He was still in hospital and had an doctor unknown to him prescribe it. (his primary care physician was out of town) Within 3 days he was complaining of severe stomach pain in upper quadrant but the doctor dismissed his pain and concerns. My 84 year old father was given this drug after being diagnosed with afib after a bout of pneumonia. He was still in hospital and had an doctor unknown to him prescribe it. (his primary care physician was out of town) Within 3 days he was complaining of severe stomach pain in upper quadrant but the doctor dismissed his pain and concerns. He was discharged 2 more days later. While recovering at home within the first week his lower legs started to swell and also develop red rash. Stomach pain continued. Nothing helped to ease the pain. Swelling was so bad that home health nurse had me take him to the ER to get checked out. The ER doctor said to stay on the pradaxa!! Even with horrible swelling and rash, plus stomach pain! I finally got him in to see his PCP, who immediately took him OFF this horrible drug! Medication was given to reduce leg swelling. Rash went away in two weeks after stopping Pradaxa. Swelling gradually went away until he no longer needed medication. Stomach pain however, remained. After 9 more months of stomach pain and additional testing, at first they thought he had an ulcer, it was determined he has stomach cancer. While we can't be sure the Pradaxa is the cause, he had good blood counts before and no history of cancer. My father believes the pradaxa caused his stomach cancer and I have found some research to back that up. There is no antidote to this drug so if you need emergency surgery you are out of luck. Also, ER docs are seeing many older people bleed out from minor cuts due to pradaxa. People are dying from this drug, yet the FDA still claims it is okay to take. While it MIGHT be alright for some, I believe it is not good for everyone, especially those who are over the age of 75. My father had no symptoms of any stomach problems before taking pradaxa. NONE. The prescribing doctor dismissed my father's report of severe pain. I will forever believe, as my father does, that this drug has caused him to have a terminal illness.
