I have used this product many times over several decades with no ill effects. It's primary effect is lubrication, which makes bowel movements a bit more comfortable and may allow healing. I don't know whether the phenylephrine has any healing effect.

Within 15 minutes of using this product I began having severe stomach cramps and rectal cramps that had me doubled up on the floor. It did reduce swelling some, but the pain lasted several hours and I will NEVER use this again.

I became I'll almost immediately with severe cramps in rectum, stomach, and had the diarrhea. I finally used a douche three times to flush it from my rectum. That was the only way I could get relief. This is the second time this has happened to me. I will NOT use this product again
