This medication has been very effective in reducing the pain and swelling in my outer ear. I live alone, so I don't have anyone to administer the drops. That is a problem. I have to gauge how many drops I am administering. I hope that's not a problem.

Two days later my ear was 100 times worse so I ended up at the emergency and doctor informed me I had an "outer" ear infection so the drops prescribed were doing nothing. Very bad ear pain and swelling made me go to an urgent care facility. At first I was diagnosed with an inner ear infection and given inner ear drops for infection along with antibiotics. Two days later my ear was 100 times worse so I ended up at the emergency and doctor informed me I had an "outer" ear infection so the drops prescribed were doing nothing. He then prescribed the Cirpo drops for swelling and another type of antibiotic and within 48 hours my ear size was back to normal. The following Monday I saw "my" doctor who told me to continue using the Cipro drops along with the meds. I will go back next week for follow up and most likely flushing of my ear, but at least the pain is gone!!

Over the past couple years I have used Cipro HC for various reasons. The first time was to treat granulation tissue left behind from an irrigation procedure (far as I can figure, my ear canal was sensitive to the pressure and possibly the solution used during the procedure). I was on the Cipro for about two weeks, but it wasn't a painful recovery. The second time I had to use it was for some irritation caused by excessive earwax buildup (I had the wax suctioned out this time--learned my lesson--and I had an ENT do it). I think I was treated for only 10 days that time. The last time I used it to treat ear canal inflammation that, for some reason, manifested while I was healing from an eardrum perforation in that same ear (I don't know why). Apparently, you can use Cipro HC drops in the presence of an eardrum perforation as long as the hole isn't too big; my ENT doctor assured me that the chemicals in the medication would not hurt my middle ear even if some of the medicine got through the hole. However, I wouldn't use it if your doctor doesn't instruct you. When in doubt, ask. And let someone put the drops in for you. That was the only difficulty I had during treatment...finding someone to administer the drops, I mean. So if you need to go on a treatment regimen with this stuff, make sure that you can make arrangements for someone to help you, and preferably someone with good eyesight. You might experience a bit of a sting if the drops make contact with inflammation or an infection, but that's normal; it goes away after a bit. Your ears are sensitive, after all.
