I'd studied Paragard for a year before deciding to finally take the plunge. Hormones had left me with some bad side effects (nausea, migraines, weight gain, hair loss). I've only had it for a week, so this is kind of premature, but at least I can tell you about the insertion. Reviews have helped me so much through this process. An hour prior to my appointment, I took 4 ibuprofen as directed (800 mg total). The doctor asked me a few questions and then prepared me for what was to come. I was so terrified, but the doctor assured me it wouldn't take long. I had read some horror stories of "pain worse than child birth" that lasted more than ten minutes, but I was prepared for the worst. The doctor said, "You're going to feel a pinch and then two big cramps. Here's the pinch." I was thinking, "Ok, this isn't so bad..." "Now here's the first big cramp." "OH MY GOD!" I started breathing so shallowly, the nurse had to remind me to take deep breaths. It was painful, very painful, but it began to subside pretty quickly. "Now here's the second big cramp." "Big" is kind of an understatement, but just as soon as I felt the pain, she said, "It's going to feel better now." And it did. Immediately. The whole thing lasted about 45 seconds. I laid down on the table for five minutes before getting up out of fear I'd get sick, but I really felt fine. I was able to stand up and walk out with no nausea and just a little weakness. That night, however, I had some of the worst cramps of my life. Ibuprofen barely curbed the pain and I had to have my boyfriend buy me a heating pad, but after about five or six hours, the cramps had gone away. For the next three or four days, I continued having cramps in the afternoon, but nothing I couldn't handle. And now, over a week later, I'm cramp-free! I'd like to write another review after I'm finally able to "utilize" my IUD, but so far I'm satisfied. If you are on the fence, I say just do it. It won't be as bad as you think!

I just got the Paragard about 3 days ago and so far so good, I had just a few cramping and spotting here and there but it's perfectly normal for that to happen, I haven't yet had any problems or concerns, so far so good. I'm loving this Birth Control! I've been reading some negative reviews but I have nothing to say...for now.

I have had the ParaGard in since 2001. I do remember some pain and spotting at the beginning. My periods seem be heavier every other month.

I wish I would have done more research before getting the ParaGard inserted 3 months ago. They said heavy periods but I didn't realize that also meant longer. Mine have been lasting around 15 days with horrible cramps and heavy bleeding for about 5 out of the 15. I can feel the pressure of it during sex and it makes working out more difficult because of the intense cramps all the time. I have ... Show Full Comment

I can feel the pressure of it during sex and it makes working out more difficult because of the intense cramps all the time. I have about a week and a half of no cramps or symptoms. I have an appointment in two days to see if it moved because I can no longer feel the strings which is a sign it's shifted. I'm writing this because I can't sleep right now due to the pain of it poking my abdomen like a knife inside my body. Just my personal account. Also I'm 29 never had a baby and am healthy, but this feels unhealthy.

I have been on Yasmin birth control since I was 16) I had Paragard inserted 5 days ago. The insertion was indeed painful, but it only lasts maybe 2 minutes max. It was a really bad cramp, but nothing unbearable. After insertion, I had pretty severe cramps for about 4 hours. But nothing advil, a heating pad and a nap cannot fix. I started bleeding about 6 hours after insertion, but it only lasted about 4 hours. Since the insertion 5 days ago I have had very minimal spotting to almost none, no cramps, no side effects. Overall, it is 100% worth it :) I know everyone's experience is different, but I wanted to share my success story.
