Mastisol was applied to my surgical site during a lumbar decompression. Withing 24 hours, I experienced severe itching, and within 48, I had a rash that swelled and blistered into the actual incision. This Acute Contact Dermatitis so compromised my skin that I subsequently contracted a systemic staph aureus infection that now requires 6 weeks of IV oxacillin. It's been a horrible experience. U

I recently had neck surgery and had an alergic reaction to Mastisol, used to secure steri-strips: red, swollen incision site, weeping yellow liquid from blisters, intense itching. I've had similar reactions when Benzoin was used as an adhesive under steri-strips so was advised not to come in contact with that after patch tests determined I was allergic to colophony and balsom of peru. I had surgery because of appendicitis and after the doctors had closed my stitches they put Mastisol on the wound to glue the steri-stips. Everything seemed normal. I recently had bunion surgery-Lapidus Bunionectomy on my right foot in July of 2011.
