After fourty years of having migraine headaches I have just gotten out of a two-week inpatient hospital stay for the MOST ACUTE headaches I have had in my life. IV Dilaudid was the only thing that quelled the pain and even that took an hour or more after the time when the drug was initially administered by hopital staff. Ultimately I was told that the headaches were caused by low blood sodium?

I have taken this medication several times over the past 3 1/2 years. I was diagnosed with rectal cancer and morphine does not work for me, so they substituted Dilaudid. The PRN shots instantly relax me and take the pain away within a minute. The Basil pump with a constant drip worked well enough that my break-thru pain was not nearly as bad as I'd expected it to be. I was recently hospitalized with a perianal abcess which required immediate surgery. While the dilaudid helped with the pre-surgical pain, I was unprepared for the post-surgical effects. This is a powerful drug and is very unlikely to be given outside the care of a medical professional. I was in the E.R. for SEVERE pain, I was temporarily relieved by this drug.
